Is 3% a good dividend yield?
What Is a Good Dividend Yield? Yields from 2% to 6% are generally considered to be a good dividend yield, but there are plenty of factors to consider when deciding if a stock's yield makes it a good investment. Your own investment goals should also play a big role in deciding what a good dividend yield is for you.
Companies issue stock dividends typically in the form of a certain percentage per share. For example, a company may issue a stock dividend of 3%, meaning that someone with 100 shares would receive three more shares.
For example, let's say a dividend stock pays a $1.00 per-share dividend and the stock price is $30.00. That gives it a 3.0% dividend yield. So if the company hikes the dividend to $1.20, the investor will make 20% more in income.
The average dividend yield on S&P 500 index companies that pay a dividend historically fluctuates somewhere between 2% and 5%, depending on market conditions. 7 In general, it pays to do your homework on stocks yielding more than 8% to find out what is truly going on with the company.
Dividend yields act as a base below which the price of a stock does not fall. More often than not, the dividend yield of around 5-6% acts as a price support for the stock as below that price the dividend yield becomes too attractive and invites buyers.
For example, suppose an investor buys $10,000 worth of a stock with a dividend yield of 4% at a rate of a $100 share price. This investor owns 100 shares that all pay a dividend of $4 per share (100 x $4 = $400 total).
A well-constructed dividend portfolio could potentially yield anywhere from 2% to 8% per year. This means that to earn $3,000 monthly from dividend stocks, the required initial investment could range from $450,000 to $1.8 million, depending on the yield.
The dividend yield measures how much income has been received relative to the share price; a higher yield is more attractive, while a lower yield can make a stock seem less competitive relative to its industry.
Dividends are never guaranteed. Companies can suspend or reduce dividends if they begin to experience financial woes — which can put those who are dependent on that income in a financial bind. Non-dividend-paying stocks typically reinvest their earnings back into the business to fuel growth.
Dividend yield is a percentage figure calculated by dividing the total annual dividend payments, per share, by the current share price of the stock. From 2% to 6% is considered a good dividend yield, but a number of factors can influence whether a higher or lower payout suggests a stock is a good investment.
Can you live off dividends?
But with the right stock portfolio, you can enjoy peace of mind as you live entirely off the dividend payments you earn. It sounds too good to be true – but it's entirely possible, and people around the world are doing it right now. You can too – it just takes a bit of education and the right tools.
Monthly dividends can be reliable source of income and act as a safeguard against inflation. Stock market investors appreciate dividends. Dividends provide cash flow and enhance total returns. They allow investors to participate directly in the revenue and earnings of the companies in their portfolios.
Stock | Trailing annual dividend yield* |
---|---|
3M Co. (ticker: MMM) | 5.7% |
Crown Castle Inc. (CCI) | 5.9% |
Pfizer Inc. (PFE) | 5.9% |
Boston Properties Inc. (BXP) | 6.2% |
How to Calculate Dividend Yield. For example, if stock XYZ had a share price of $50 and an annualized dividend of $1.00, its yield would be 2%. When the 0.02 is put into percentage terms, it would make a 2% yield. If this share price rose to $60, but the dividend payout was not increased, its yield would fall to 1.66%.
Generally speaking, double-digit dividend yields are indeed too good to be true. They are often either being paid by unstable companies, or simply represent too much of a company's earnings to be sustainable. Of course, there are some exceptions.
Dividend investing can be a great investment strategy. Dividend stocks have historically outperformed the S&P 500 with less volatility. That's because dividend stocks provide two sources of return: regular income from dividend payments and capital appreciation of the stock price. This total return can add up over time.
For example, if a company issues a stock dividend of 5%, it will pay 0.05 shares for every share owned by a shareholder. The owner of 100 shares would get five additional shares.

How do I make $500 a month in dividends?
That usually comes in quarterly, semi-annual or annual payments. Shares of public companies that split profits with shareholders by paying cash dividends yield between 2% and 6% a year. With that in mind, putting $250,000 into low-yielding dividend stocks or $83,333 into high-yielding shares will get your $500 a month.
In a market that generates a 2% annual yield, you would need to invest $600,000 up front in order to reliably generate $12,000 per year (or $1,000 per month) in dividend payments.
They're paid out of the earnings and profits of the corporation. Dividends can be classified either as ordinary or qualified. Whereas ordinary dividends are taxable as ordinary income, qualified dividends that meet certain requirements are taxed at lower capital gain rates.
1. Realty Income (O) Realty Income is a REIT whose identity is predicated on monthly dividends, as it calls itself “The Monthly Dividend Company.” This company owns single-unit commercial properties that it leases to high-quality tenants for long terms, typically more than 10 years.
Dividends are typically issued quarterly but can also be disbursed monthly or annually. Distributions are announced in advance and determined by the company's board of directors. Companies pay dividends for a variety of reasons, most often to show their financial stability and to keep or attract investors.
