What is the yield of an ETF?
Distribution yield is calculated by annualizing the most recent distribution—income, capital gains, etc. —then dividing by the ETF's current net asset value (NAV). It's useful as a shorthand, given that it uses the fund's up-to-date NAV and cash distributions that it's actually made.
Symbol | Name | Dividend Yield |
---|---|---|
PEX | ProShares Global Listed Private Equity ETF | 12.14% |
SPYI | NEOS S&P 500 High Income ETF | 12.10% |
BTF | Valkyrie Bitcoin and Ether Strategy ETF | 12.08% |
SDIV | Global X SuperDividend ETF | 12.06% |
The 30-day yield is calculated by taking the fund's interest and/or dividend earnings for the most recent month and dividing by the average number of shares outstanding for the month times the highest share offer price on the last day of the month.
Year | Investment Return | ETF Effective Rate |
---|---|---|
Year | Investment Return | ETF Effective Rate |
2020 | 15.2% | 10.9% |
2019 | 19.9% | 7.7% |
2018 | -3.3% (loss) | 5.0% |
When evaluating an ETF 's yield, you're most likely to find one of these options: 30-day SEC yield: The 30-day SEC yield represents the dividends and interest earned over the preceding 30 day period, annualized, and divided by the net asset value (NAV) per share at the end of the period.

If the stocks owned by the fund pay dividends, the money is passed along to the investor. Most ETFs pay these dividends quarterly on a pro-rata basis, where payments are based on the number of shares the investor owns.
One of the ways that investors make money from exchange traded funds (ETFs) is through dividends that are paid to the ETF issuer and then paid on to their investors in proportion to the number of shares each holds.

How much would $1000 invested in the S&P 500 in 1980 be worth today?
In 1980, had you invested a mere $1,000 in what went on to become the top-performing stock of S&P 500, then you would be sitting on a cool $1.2 million today.
Hold ETFs throughout your working life. Hold ETFs as long as you can, give compound interest time to work for you. Sell ETFs to fund your retirement. Don't sell ETFs during a market crash.
ETF | Assets Under Management | Expense Ratio |
---|---|---|
Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) | $70 billion | 0.10% |
VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) | $16.3 billion | 0.35% |
Invesco S&P MidCap Momentum ETF (XMMO) | $1.6 billion | 0.34% |
SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) | $1.8 billion | 0.35% |
The low investment threshold for most ETFs makes it easy for a beginner to implement a basic asset allocation strategy that matches their investment time horizon and risk tolerance. For example, young investors might be 100% invested in equity ETFs when they are in their 20s.
Though ETFs allow investors to gain as stock prices rise and fall, they also benefit from companies that pay dividends. Dividends are a portion of earnings allocated or paid by companies to investors for holding their stock.
Yield is the amount an investment earns during a time period, usually reflected as a percentage. Return is how much an investment earns or loses over time, reflected as the difference in the holding's dollar value. The yield is forward-looking and the return is backward-looking.
Stock ETFs usually only pay out their dividends quarterly. Sure, you can sell some of your shares every month to create a pseudo-income stream, but that can start to get messy, especially from a tax planning standpoint.
Vanguard S&P 500 ETF holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 2 (Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. Because of this, VOO is a great option for investors seeking exposure to the Style Box - Large Cap Blend segment of the market.
If you own shares of an exchange-traded fund (ETF), you may receive distributions in the form of dividends. These may be paid monthly or at some other interval, depending on the ETF. It's important to know that not all dividends are treated the same from a tax perspective.
Most ETF income is generated by the fund's underlying holdings. Typically, that means dividends from stocks or interest (coupons) from bonds. Dividends: These are a portion of the company's earnings paid out in cash or shares to stockholders on a per-share basis, sometimes to attract investors to buy the stock.
Do ETFs outperform stocks?
Stock-picking offers an advantage over exchange-traded funds (ETFs) when there is a wide dispersion of returns from the mean. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer advantages over stocks when the return from stocks in the sector has a narrow dispersion around the mean.
The Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF has achieved a total return of 298% since its inception on Nov. 10, 2006, which is equivalent to an annual return of 8.25%.
Automatic dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) directly from the fund sponsor aren't yet available on all ETFs although most brokerages will allow you to set up a DRIP for any ETF that pays dividends. This can be a smart idea because there's often a longer settlement time required by ETFs.
Stock | Dividend yield | Dividend growth streak |
---|---|---|
Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) | 2.4% | 68 years |
3M Co. (MMM) | 6.5% | 65 years |
Coca-Cola Co. (KO) | 3.3% | 61 years |
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) | 3.2% | 61 years |
Note that the price of an ETF rises as the fund accrues the dividends paid by the companies it holds, and then is adjusted downward by the amount of the dividend before the market opens on the ex-dividend date because the cash being distributed will no longer be part of the fund's total net asset value (NAV).
