Does Jepi pay monthly dividends?
An Above-Average Monthly Dividend
In a market that generates a 2% annual yield, you would need to invest $600,000 up front in order to reliably generate $12,000 per year (or $1,000 per month) in dividend payments. How Can You Make $1,000 Per Month In Dividends? Here are the steps you can take to build yourself a sufficient dividend portfolio.
RESULTS. Provided an attractive 12-month rolling dividend yield of 8.50% and 30-day SEC yield of 7.04%. Yield ranked in the top one-third of the Derivative Income category. Competitively priced vs. peers at 0.35%.
This means that JEPI provides significant cash flow to investors and accelerates their ability to cover their living expenses with passive income. Its monthly payout policy means that investors get the aforementioned hefty cash flow stream hitting their accounts on a more regular basis than what is offered by most ETFs ...
The first high-octane income stock capable of generating $200 in monthly income from a beginning investment of $27,000 that's split in thirds is retail real estate investment trust (REIT) Realty Income (O 1.46%).
A well-constructed dividend portfolio could potentially yield anywhere from 2% to 8% per year. This means that to earn $3,000 monthly from dividend stocks, the required initial investment could range from $450,000 to $1.8 million, depending on the yield.
But even at 9.5%, we're talking about a middle-class income of $4,000 per month on an investment of just a touch over $500K. Below, I'll reveal how to start building a portfolio that could get you an even bigger income stream than this today.
Cons of Investing in JEPI
Market risk: Like all investment securities, JEPI is subject to market risk. For example, although JEPI can reduce market volatility, negative returns can still occur, as was the case in 2022 when JEPI outperformed stocks and bonds but still had a price decline of –3.52%.
At that time, JEPI had a trailing 12-month dividend yield of 11.45%. That has since dropped to 10% and is getting worse. If you annualize the last six monthly payments, the yield drops to 8.4%. And if you just take the latest payout of $0.3382 and annualize it, your yield dips to 7.6%.
Due to its defensive structure, JEPI may underperform in the long run. This is not necessarily a bad thing because we are not forgetting what we like about JEPI: low volatility. Reducing it comes at a price and in this case it is not too high.
Is JEPI yield sustainable?
JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (NYSEARCA:JEPI) is designed primarily for income-focused investors as it pays a monthly dividend. Based on its relatively attractive 8.3% payout, it's expected to be a core holding of income investors looking to focus on generating a sustainable monthly dividend.
JEPI may be tax-inefficient, as distributions from the fund may be taxed as income, and dividends from underlying stock holdings are not considered qualified because of the offsetting options positions. JEPI isn't eligible for Tax-Loss Harvesting, since we can't find a viable alternate fund.
Their recent payouts were impressive: JEPI's 12-month yield was 11.7% at the end of 2022, compared with only 1.7% for the S&P 500 index. The majority of this yield came from selling one-month calls on the S&P 500 and paying out all the proceeds, or call premiums.
To generate $5,000 per month in dividends, you would need a portfolio value of approximately $1 million invested in stocks with an average dividend yield of 5%. For example, Johnson & Johnson stock currently yields 2.7% annually. $1 million invested would generate about $27,000 per year or $2,250 per month.
Shares of public companies that split profits with shareholders by paying cash dividends yield between 2% and 6% a year. With that in mind, putting $250,000 into low-yielding dividend stocks or $83,333 into high-yielding shares will get your $500 a month.
With a 10% yield and monthly payout schedule, you can get to $500 a month with only $60,000 invested. That is, $6,000 per year paid on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, most stocks don't have yields anywhere near 10%. Many do have high enough yields to get you to $500 a month with diligent savings, but don't pay monthly.
Stock | Dividend yield |
---|---|
Vail Resorts Inc. (MTN) | 4.2% |
First American Financial Corp. (FAF) | 3.8% |
Pfizer Inc. (PFE) | 6.6% |
Coca-Cola Co. (KO) | 3.3% |
Consider the 80% rule
It's not an exact science, of course, but it's a good starting point to estimate the amount you'll need. So, if your annual income is $30,000 right now, then 80% of that is $24,000. This is roughly what you'll spend to maintain a lifestyle similar to the one you have right now.
At recent prices, shares of Altria Group (NYSE: MO), Ares Capital (NASDAQ: ARCC), and AT&T (NYSE: T) offer an average yield of 8.5%. This means you can secure $1,000 of annual-dividend income by investing about $11,765 spread evenly among them.
Dividend ETF | Assets under management | Expense ratio |
---|---|---|
Vanguard High Dividend Yield Index ETF (VYM) | $55 billion | 0.06% |
Vanguard Real Estate ETF (VNQ) | $34 billion | 0.12% |
iShares International Select Dividend ETF (IDV) | $4.2 billion | 0.51% |
Global X SuperDividend ETF (SDIV) | $760 million | 0.58% |
How much do I need to invest a month to be a millionaire in 5 years?
Suppose you're starting from scratch and have no savings. You'd need to invest around $13,000 per month to save a million dollars in five years, assuming a 7% annual rate of return and 3% inflation rate. For a rate of return of 5%, you'd need to save around $14,700 per month.
And if you've got a large portfolio totaling more than $1.1 million, your dividend income could come in around $50,000 per year. By then, there could be other dividend-focused ETFs to choose from.
So over the past two years, JEPI has outperformed the market during bad times and lagged the market during good times while still producing double-digit annualized returns and paying its investors a monthly dividend, which pretty much sums up its value proposition for investors.
Overall, SCHD is a better option if you are looking for a passively managed ETF with a low expense ratio and consistent performance over the last ten years. If you want an actively managed ETF with a high dividend yield over the last several years and a well-diversified portfolio, then JEPI is a better option.
JEPI and JEPQ both sport strong dividend yields, a significant benefit for investors, and their core investment thesis. Both are ultimately income vehicles, which investors buy (or not) for their dividends. JEPQ's yield is quite a bit higher, at 11.1% versus 9.3%, an important advantage of the fund compared to JEPI.
