Why Disney Needs New Rules for Haunted Mansion (2024)

Welcome, Foolish Mortals…to the Haunted Mansion.

No more iconic words were ever spoken, and a lot of us Disney fans get giddy when we hear them. Haunted Mansion might be a classic Disney ride, but it’s also a favorite — for a reason…even if it does use special effects invented 162 years ago. However, we think it’s time for some changes at Haunted Mansion (and no, we’re not talking about Hat Box Ghost coming to Disney World).

We’re talking about the rules at Haunted Mansion because we think more visitors to its hallowed haunted halls should just have more respect for it and its happy haunts.

Stop reciting the dialogue

We hear you, Disney adults. You’re standing in the back of the stretching room loudly speaking each bit of dialogue along with the Ghost Host. Yes, you might think this makes you cool and knowledgeable, but you are ruining the experience for those who are experiencing Haunted Mansion for the first time.

In other words, if your name isn’t “Ghost Host,” keep your mouth closed. Or just silently say the words to yourself.

Stop taking Hitchhiking Ghosts Home

Yes, those Hitchhiking Ghosts will do everything to go home with you, but you do not need to adopt every ghost you come across in the mansion. Trust us — it will just create problems for you. You’ll have to keep them entertained, they’re often mischievous, and they will probably terrify your pets.

So although they may beg and plead, leave the ghosts inside the Haunted Mansion where they belong.

Don’t forget your death certificate

If you plan on hurrying back to the Haunted Mansion, as the ride tells you at the end, you’ll want to heed one key detail: “be sure to bring your death certificate.” Basically, the Haunted Mansion doesn’t want you to come back unless you’re ready to become one of its Happy Haunts.

So if you don’t have a death certificate, you probably shouldn’t go back to the Haunted Mansion, just in case they really do have room for one more.

Don’t pull down on the safety bar

So you’ve managed not to trip on the moving walkway and you’re finally sitting down in your Doom Buggy, and your first instinct is to grab the safety bar and pull it toward you. But you should NOT.

Why? Because the Ghost Host explains that he’ll do it for you. He’s got ONE job, and you should let him do it.

No flash photography

Okay, now that we’ve had our fun, we are going to get to the real rules. Yes, everything inside of Haunted Mansion is amazing, and you’ll want to take photos. Take all the photos you want, but make sure your flash is off.

The last thing you want to do is blind everyone else on the ride for one photo that’s probably going to be blurry anyway. Just don’t do it.

Don’t bring your loved ones’ ashes

Yes, people bring the ashes of their loved ones to spread inside the Haunted Mansion, and it happens a lot. Cast Members even have a special code for it, “Code A.” When a Code A is called, the ride has to be stopped and Cast Members start looking for those ashes with a black light.

Then a maintenance team in special gear has to be called to clean up the ashes. That means the ride closes because it’s essentially become a biohazard. Please don’t do this. Those ashes will just likely end up getting vacuumed up.

Keep your hands and feet in the Doom buggy

Yes, the scenery in Haunted Mansion is incredible, and you may feel like standing up inside your Doom Buggy and reaching out to touch it just to see how real it is. Okay, don’t do this. There’s a reason Disney World rides always tell you to keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle.

You could get hurt if you try to do something like this, and then the ride would need to be shut down, and everyone would eventually know why.

So the next time you ride Haunted Mansion, be sure to keep these rules in mind. Enjoy the ride, but allow everyone else to enjoy it, too.
