What are the yellow wires on a Honeywell zone valve? ›

The yellow wires power the zone valve. Once the thermostat calls and the valve opens it closes an end switch (connected to the red leads) which calls in the aquastat relay.

The Honeywell V4043H1106 28mm 2-port zone valve has 6 wires. Five of these wires are the same as 22mm 2-port valve. Green/yellow is Earth, blue is Neutral, brown is Live (or Line) to the motor, grey and orange are connected to the end switch and form part of a separate circuit.

Red: Hot Wire

Like black electrical wires, red wires are also hot or live wires. Red can also be the connecting wire between two smoke detectors that are hardwired. Also, if your circuit box is wired for 240 volts instead of 120 volts, you may even see both red and black wires.

The Y wire is yellow and connects to your air conditioning compressor. The G wire is green and connects to the fan.

The Blue or C Wire

C wires, whether blue or other color, may apply to every thermostat, but blue C wires are primarily used for thermostats that are attached to a heat pump. This wire connects to terminal B on your thermostat.

Typically, the yellow wires are for cooling, the green wire is for the fan, the orange wire is for heat pump systems, and the red wire is for power.

S1 & S2 - Some thermostats have this terminal and it used for an outdoor temperature sensor. The wire uses for this should be special shielded wire and completely separate form the other thermostat wires.

If you have two wires, R or RH go into the R terminal and RC into the RC terminal. If you have more than one wire (for example, you have a wire labeled R and another wire labeled Rc), remove any jumpers between the R and Rc terminals or push the switch to open the RC terminal to insert a wire.

If you put wires into the wrong thermostat connectors during setup can, this can cause your system to malfunction or possibly damage it.

The brown is a switched live to the motor and the grey is a permanent live to the micro-switch which then energises the orange wire to the boiler - which must only operate once the valve has been opened.

Once the valve is pushed all the way open, it also pushes down a microswitch, activating the circuit between the Permanent Life (usually a grey wire) and the Switch Live (usually orange in colour). Once the 230V hits the Switch Live, the boiler ignites.

2 Port Valve

Green/Yellow, Earth – connected to the metal body of the valve. Blue, Neutral – internally connected to the neutral side of the motor. Brown, Live in – Activates the motor inside the valve.

Zone valves

The valves have 5 wires - blue neutral, green/yellow earth. Brown is connected to the motor inside, grey and orange are connected to an internal switch. When 230V is connected to the brown wire, the motor opens the valve and the switch inside connects grey and orange together.

The small red wire with the eyelet is the wire that carries the voltage to the start switch.

Red wires are usually used as secondary hot wires. Red wires are also hot and should be clearly marked to avoid the dangers of electrocution. Red wires are commonly used when installing ceiling fans, where the light switch maybe.
